The Beginning – How Plastic Injection Moulding Was Born
The journey of injection moulding began in the late 19th century.
In 1872, John Wesley Hyatt, an American inventor, created the first injection moulding machine while trying to make billiard balls from celluloid. His invention used a piston to inject heated material into a mould cavity.
Over the years, the process improved significantly. In the 1940s and 1950s, with the development of better plastics like Nylon, Polypropylene, ABS, and Polycarbonate, injection moulding became faster, more precise, and highly reliable.
By the 1960s, it had become the preferred manufacturing process for mass production of plastic parts across the world.
Injection Moulding Comes to India
The industrial growth in India during the 1960s and 1970s created a strong demand for plastic products.
Initially, most plastic components were imported.
But as industries grew and the need for cost-effective manufacturing increased, Indian entrepreneurs began investing in plastic moulding technology.
The 1970s and 1980s saw the first wave of injection moulding machines arriving in India, primarily in metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata. These machines were mostly used for automotive, electrical, and consumer products.

Surat, known worldwide today as the Textile Capital of India, was rapidly expanding in the 1970s and 1980s.
The growth of the textile industry created a huge requirement for quality plastic components, spares, and custom parts for machinery.
